Overview

ButterReel (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a product of ButterSquared. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our web application at butterreel.buttersquared.com and related services (collectively, the “Service”).

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your name and email address. If you sign in via Google OAuth, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google. Authentication is handled by Clerk, our third-party authentication provider.

Recipe and Content Data

When you submit a video URL, we process the video to extract recipe information including ingredients, cooking steps, times, and servings. We also generate blog post content based on this extracted data. This recipe data and generated content is stored in your account and can be edited or deleted by you.

WordPress Connection Data

If you connect a WordPress site, we store your site URL and an API key that you generate through our WordPress plugin. This key is used solely to publish recipe posts to your site on your behalf.

Payment Information

Payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe. We do not receive, store, or have access to your full credit card number. We receive a Stripe customer ID and basic subscription status information (plan type, billing period) to manage your account.

Usage Data

We collect information about how you use the Service, including the number of recipes processed, blog regenerations used, and quality ratings you provide. We use error tracking (Sentry) which may collect technical information about errors you encounter, including browser type, operating system, and stack traces.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• • Process your video submissions and generate recipe content
• • Publish content to your connected WordPress site at your request
• • Process payments and manage your subscription
• • Send you service-related communications (account verification, billing, support responses)
• • Monitor and improve extraction quality and service reliability
• • Detect and prevent technical issues and abuse

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data to train AI models.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate ButterReel. Each has its own privacy policy governing how it handles your data:

Video Processing

When you submit a video URL, the URL is sent to Google's Gemini API for processing. For YouTube videos, the video is processed directly via the YouTube URL — we do not download or store the video file. For TikTok videos, the video may be temporarily downloaded for processing and is deleted after extraction is complete.

We do not retain copies of your videos. We only store the structured recipe data and blog content that results from processing.

Data Retention

Your account data and recipe content are retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete a recipe, it is permanently removed from our database. If you delete your account, all associated data — including recipes, settings, and WordPress connection details — is permanently deleted.

Payment records maintained by Stripe are subject to Stripe's retention policies and applicable financial record-keeping requirements.

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest. Access to production systems is restricted to authorized personnel. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• • Edit or delete individual recipes
• • Delete your account and all associated data
• • Disconnect your WordPress site at any time
• • Cancel your subscription at any time

Cookies

ButterReel uses cookies and similar technologies strictly for authentication and session management (via Clerk). We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies.

Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
